Vision

The first priority

The first priority for Friends of the Coltrane Home is to complete the restoration of the Home. Once the restoration is complete, Friends will seek to maximize opportunities to support the preservation of the Home and the fulfillment of its mission by conducting a range of programs that further the group’s mission. The Home’s programs will connect the vision to contemporary concerns and interests, providing a rich resource for both the neighboring community and for the global community of interest in John and Alice Coltrane’s legacy, underscoring the continued relevance of their work and values to society today.

Working with AEA Consulting and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Friends of the Coltrane Home has adopted a programming vision that creates a sustainable business model that generates a balanced budget based on realistic, achievable, and reasoned assumptions for income and expenses and a diversity of earned revenue opportunities (tickets, merchandise, rentals, etc.) to supplement contributed revenue.

The modest scale of the house limits earned income potential on site, especially from house tours. To that end, the Home will move beyond being a stand-alone site that primarily focuses on tours and will add programming that broadens the appeal of the project and provides a platform for ancillary earned income.

Such programming will allow for diversification of funding and of supporters that can be approached. It also opens up the opportunity for partnerships that may bring resources to the table that help offset or defray costs.

The Home will take advantage of the significant global interest in John and Alice Coltrane. Their music is internationally resonant and although jazz is in its origins an American art form, it has a global following—John’s later music and Alice’s work is particularly resonant outside the United States because of the international influences that they openly acknowledged and absorbed.

The programming will be in three areas:

  1. Historic House Museum
  2. Education and Outreach Programs
  3. Artistic Creation

These three elements together will allow the Friends to realize its mission and engage a broad enough base of stakeholders to ensure a viable business model.
