Event Description
The John & Alice Coltrane Home will present its third annual Force For Good Day on Saturday, November 14, at 3 p.m. at Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills, as part of its yearlong celebration of “John Coltrane at 100: The Coltrane Legacy.” The free program will feature student musicians performing as the Coltrane Home Youth Ensemble, celebrating Coltrane’s legacy through music, creativity, and community.
The program marks the continuation of the Coltrane Home initiative: the Coltrane Home Ensemble, a growing, grassroots musical community inspired by Coltrane’s legacy. This year’s student musicians will engage with returning students, who will have the opportunity to become mentors to new members, creating an evolving community of young musicians connected through their shared experience. Building the Coltrane Home Youth Ensemble is one way the Coltrane Home is putting its mission “to be a force for good” into action. By giving young people a place to develop their musical voices, learn from one another, and connect with the ideas and values that shaped Coltrane’s life and work, the program aims to create something that will grow far beyond a single performance. The program also will feature Jeff Lederer, jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator, who will engage students and the audience in a discussion of Coltrane’s importance in education. The Coltrane Youth Ensemble will then perform, giving the young musicians an opportunity to share the music they have studied and to perform alongside professional jazz musicians.
