As work on the exterior of The Home progresses, the interior is simultaneously being transformed. Attentive restoration efforts to revive the rooms of the Home are ongoing and aim to honor both the spirit of the Coltrane’s and the spirit of the Home itself. The upstairs bedroom where A Love Supreme was created and Alice’s basement recording studio are two of the spaces in particular that have received dedicated attention thus far.
The walls with white and floral wallpaper that had once adorned the upstairs loft have been mostly stripped away, leaving the framework of the walls exposed in preparation for new work to be done. The window of the room that overlooks the back of the property was replaced during the rebricking process of the facade of the Home and was replicated to be the same as what was included in the Homes original design. The Love Supreme Room will be an educational space that tells the history of the creation of the legendary album while also sparking creativity and curiosity in the minds of those who visit the space.
Alice’s basement studio was found in a more dilapidated state than the Love Supreme room was. Evidence of extensive damage within the space was clear to see. The panels of the basement ceiling were falling off, creating debris that needed to be cleared.
The plan for the basement studio space is to recreate a functional recording space that can be used by musicians and students. The basement space will also have historical components, showcasing materials such as photographs or documents to recognize just how important the studio was to Alice’s career as a jazz musician.
As a part of the cleanup effort, the basement was stripped of the remaining ceiling and wall paneling that was water damaged and unsalvageable. Brickwork and the concrete floors of the space were exposed, and a passageway between the studio and the garage area was created. As of 2026, the basement area has received a refreshment of the concrete floors as well as a new coat of paint to the walls. The restoration of the basement aims to keep the original vintage charm of the space but with modern recording equipment. Alice Coltrane’s legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of performers as they create in the very space she once did.
