Creative energy thrived in every corner of the Coltrane Home with bold colors radiating throughout the space. From the meditation rooms vibrant carpets and colorful rose window to the quirky bathrooms with pink and blue and toilets, there truly was not a dull area in the home. John Coltrane found the aesthetic that he and his wife Alice cultivated to be quite influential, often taking inspiration from The Home and incorporating them into his music. The living room was one such room that John gravitated toward. Being the family man that he was, one could imagine John, Alice, and the children spending quality time together in this room and filling the space with memories.
John’s 1695 album, Living Space, was thought to have been inspired by the living room in the Dix Hills Home. The album featured previously unreleased work from Coltrane, including some untitled compositions. Coltrane’s personal memories of quality time with his family intertwined with the patterned rugs in the space around them to take listeners on what feels like a journey through memories. Living Space is an album with a spirit of its own, one that encapsulates his final years of his life spent in the Long Island Home.
