On May 18, 2024, a free meditation session was held at the Walt Whitman House in recognition of Mother’s Day as part of the “Year of Alice” celebrations. “Meditation for Moms” was a guided meditation session that was accompanied by Alice Coltrane’s music. Alice was both a mother and very spiritual person, which makes this event fitting to entwine into the “Year of Alice.” Meditation was a large part of Alice’s life, and she even had a room in her Dix Hills house dedicated to the art of meditation.
While the meditation session specifically honors mothers, one did not have to be a mother to participate. Those who attended the event learned how to find their own inner peace with the help of Alice Coltrane’s music. This meditation session highlighted that through the combination of meditation and music, one can begin to embark on their own spiritual journey.
