On April 14, 2024, Shapeshifter Plus in Brooklyn, New York, hosted a listening party for one of Alice Coltrane’s albums, Transfiguration Live. To start the listening session, Ravi Coltrane introduced his mother’s 1978 album and reflected on how he was 14 years old at the time, screaming with enthusiasm while cheering on his mother as she performed on stage. The listening session of Alice’s album was followed by a discussion with special guests Reggie Workman, Ravi Coltrane, and Matthew Garrison. Workman, who was one of the performers alongside Alice during the recording of the album, gave those in attendance a rare glimpse into the making of Transfiguration Live. He spoke about what it was like to record the album and his overall experience performing for this album. This event allowed Alice’s fans and family to reflect on the life and legacy of one of jazz music’s most talented Black female musicians.
